What do T‑corking machine terms mean?

A shared vocabulary prevents confusion during quotation, sample trials and acceptance. These definitions explain the main T‑cork, bottle, feeder, support and machine terms used across the Lancing T‑corking guides.

Closure and bottle terms

T‑cork or bar-top closureA closure with a visible top and a shank that enters the bottle neck. Buyers may use the terms T‑cork, T‑top, bar-top or stopper differently, so samples matter.
Shank diameterThe diameter of the closure portion that enters the bottle neck. It must be assessed against the internal bottle-neck profile, not just the nominal bottle size.
Bottle-neck boreThe internal opening and profile of the bottle neck. Variation through depth and between supplier batches can affect insertion and retention.
Finished heightThe accepted visual height of the closure after insertion, normally assessed at the top or seating position defined by the pack standard.
Insertion depthThe amount the closure shank is pressed into the neck. It should be measured consistently and linked to the accepted finished appearance.

Machine and feeding terms

FeederThe system that presents closures to the machine. It may be manual, magazine-based, rail-fed, bowl-fed or configured around the closure geometry.
Bowl sorterA feeder that uses controlled vibration and tooling to orient closures before transfer. Suitability depends on closure shape, weight and finish.
EscapementThe mechanism that releases one closure at the correct point in the cycle. Poor escapement control can create double-feed, no-feed or tilted insertion faults.
Chuck or press toolThe tooling that contacts the closure during insertion. It must support the closure without damaging decorative tops or allowing the shank to enter at an angle.
Bottle supportThe base, side, neck or format support that holds the bottle in position under the press head.
Accepted good outputThe number of bottles that pass the agreed finished-height, appearance, retention and handling checks, not merely the machine’s isolated cycle count.

Common terminology questions

Is a T‑cork the same as a bar-top closure?

The terms are often used for similar decorative closures with a top and a shank, but suppliers and buyers may not use them identically. For machinery specification, the actual samples, dimensions, material and required finished appearance are more important than the name used in the enquiry.

Is finished height the same as insertion depth?

Finished height and insertion depth are related but not identical. Finished height is the visible accepted result after pressing; insertion depth describes how far the closure is driven into the bottle neck. A project should define how both are measured and when they are inspected.

What is an escapement on a T‑corker?

An escapement controls the release of individual closures from the feeder or rail into the press sequence. It helps prevent double feeding, missing closures and poorly timed presentation. The escapement must match the closure geometry and the line’s stop-start behaviour.
